Why toenails get thicker
Toenails can thicken with age, from pressure in your shoes, after an injury or with circulation problems. Nail fungus is often behind it too: the nail turns yellowish to brownish, becomes brittle and thickens.
Whether you have nail fungus and how it should be treated is for your doctor to decide. My job is the professional, hygienic care of the nail.
How I care for thick and fungal nails
Using a foot care device with fine, sterilised attachments, I file down the thickened nail plate layer by layer until the nail is a comfortable thickness again. Then I trim and smooth the edges and clean the nail fold.
If your nail fungus is being treated by a doctor, regular thinning of the nail can be useful — it's best to discuss this with your doctor. If part of the nail is missing once that treatment is complete, nail prosthetics can even out the look of the nail.
Hygiene comes first
Hygiene is especially important with fungal nails. All instruments are cleaned, disinfected and sterilised in an autoclave after every appointment; files, gloves and covers are used only once.
Tips for home
- Dry your feet thoroughly after washing — especially between the toes
- Wash socks at 60 °C or higher
- Don't share towels, and change them regularly
- Wear pool shoes or flip-flops at swimming pools, in saunas and in changing rooms
- Let your shoes dry out well and alternate between pairs
