Why foot care matters so much with diabetes
Persistently high blood sugar can damage nerves and blood vessels. Your feet then feel pressure, heat or small injuries less clearly — and an ingrown nail or a callus can turn into a problem without you noticing.
Regular, professional foot care and an attentive eye help to spot changes early and get medical advice in good time.
What I pay special attention to with diabetes
- More time per appointment — around 60 minutes
- Extra-careful work on nails and hard skin
- Sterile instruments and single-use materials at every appointment
- A close look at skin, nails and the spaces between the toes
- Honest words: if I notice anything, I'll recommend straight away that you see a doctor or a podiatry practice
- Care tips that suit your situation
Foot care or podiatry?
If you have been diagnosed with diabetic foot syndrome, your doctor can prescribe podiatry treatment. This is carried out by podiatrists (Podologen) — and in many cases your health insurance covers the cost.
I'm a trained foot care specialist and offer foot care for people with diabetes who have no wounds and no inflammation.
Daily foot check — how to do it
- Look at your feet every day — use a mirror for the soles
- Wash them in lukewarm water and check the temperature with a thermometer
- Dry them thoroughly, including between the toes
- Moisturise daily, but not between the toes
- Don't walk barefoot, and feel inside your shoes before putting them on
- File your nails rather than cutting them
