How heel cracks form
The hard skin on the heel is particularly thick. When it becomes dry and loses its elasticity, it splits under pressure — creating fissures, known medically as rhagades. Dry heated air, open shoes in summer, standing for long periods and conditions such as diabetes all make this more likely.
How I care for cracked heels
First, I gently remove the hardened skin around the cracks so the edges don't split any further. I carefully clean and smooth the cracks themselves. Then I care for the skin with a rich cream.
For deeper cracks, I usually recommend several appointments a few weeks apart. That gives the skin time to recover.
How to keep your heels supple
- Apply a urea-based foot cream to your heels every day
- File hard skin gently once a week — don't use a callus shaver
- Wear shoes with a closed heel and good support
- Drink enough water, especially when the heating is on
- Wear cotton socks overnight after applying cream
