Ingrown, reddened toenail before and well-groomed nail after foot care

How to recognise an ingrown toenail

It's usually the big toe. The side edge of the nail presses into the nail fold, and the skin next to it is red, tender and sore — especially in tight shoes. The technical term is unguis incarnatus.

  • Pain when pressure is put on the side of the nail
  • Redness or slight swelling of the nail fold
  • Discomfort when walking, doing sport or wearing closed shoes
  • A strongly curved nail (involuted or pincer nail) that presses into the skin at the sides

Common causes

Often it comes down to small everyday habits: cutting nails too short or rounding off the corners, shoes that are too tight, or a lot of pressure during sport. A naturally very curved nail shape or an injury to the toe can also make a nail grow back awkwardly.

How I help at your foot care appointment

I work exclusively with sterilised instruments and take my time with every step. First, I clean the nail fold and remove any hard skin or debris that adds to the pressure. Then I carefully trim and smooth the ingrown edge of the nail to take the pressure off the skin.

If needed, I protect the nail fold with a fine tamponade so the nail can grow out over the skin again. If the nail keeps growing in, a nail correction brace is often the long-term solution: it gently lifts the nail — with no incision at all.

What you can do yourself

  • Cut your toenails straight across and don't round off the corners
  • Don't cut them too short — the nail should end level with the tip of the toe
  • Wear shoes with enough room for your toes
  • Don't cut into the nail fold with scissors yourself — it's very easy to injure the skin
  • Check your feet regularly, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation

Process

How your appointment works

  1. Consultation

We talk about your symptoms, any medical conditions and the shoes you wear.

  2. Assessment

I take a close look at the nail and the nail fold. If the toe is inflamed, I'll recommend that you see a doctor first.

  3. Relief

Using sterile instruments, I trim and smooth the edge of the nail, clean the nail fold and protect it if needed.

  4. Care plan

You'll get tips on how to cut your nails properly — and, where it makes sense, a recommendation for a nail correction brace.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Relief and care for an ingrown toenail costs from €90 and takes about 30 minutes. I'll confirm the exact price with you beforehand — it depends on the condition of the nail and the work involved.

I work gently and talk you through every step. Most people feel the pressure easing during the appointment itself. If the nail fold is very sensitive, I go especially slowly.

Not always. If the nail only grows in now and then, professional trimming and the right cutting technique are often enough. For recurring problems or strongly curved nails, I recommend a nail correction brace — it corrects the direction of growth over several months.

The best way is to message me on WhatsApp — feel free to send a photo. If it's acute, I'll try to offer you an appointment as soon as possible.

Yes. In an online consultation, I assess your situation by video call or from photos and tell you which steps make sense and who can help you locally.
